The straight forward solution

Hpower Motion solid stack actuators are where it all begins. These systems are comprised of our smart PZT ceramics, optimized to deliver high power with dynamic performance. The term “stack” comes from Hpower actuators unique, disk layering design, and serve as the straight forward solution to many applications. These systems feature a motion range up to 260um and higher upon request, with forces up to 50kN.

All of our stacks come with both encased and bare stack options, with and without a preload. Preloading actuators allows for increased dynamic capabilities by protecting the system for problematic tensile forces. Encasing the system also protects it from the environment, and can be augmented to allow for operation in vacuum conditions and increased thermostability for longer run times. All of our systems can also have acceleration/force measurement and position systems to be integrated into the actuator.

The robust choice

Ring type actuators based on a hollow cylindrical design. Compared with stack type actuators, ring actuators have a higher bending stability, better heat management efficiency and allow access to the systems axis. Given the same volume of PZT material, a ring actuator has a larger total diameter, which results in increase in stability against bending and buckling forces applied to the actuator. Their overall larger surface also removes heat quicker from the system, which allows them to run at much higher frequencies than stack type actuators can achieve without overheating. The hpower ring Series is offered with or without preload, and optional casing.

Our ring actuators can achieve a motion range of 0µm - 130µm, while generating maximum forces of up to 35kN.

The hpower rings can be customized with low temperature modification, thermostability and cooling options and even an axial cable exit, giving you more freedom and flexibility with your application design.

Our single and symmetrical shock generators are built with both single and dual directional outputs. The hpower shock series is specifically developed for stress tests, where instant acceleration and velocity is needed.  With our unique stack design, we achieve double the power density of traditional ceramics, and subsequently generate much greater forces and accelerations. The piezo stack can build up a propagating pressure front in a coupled body. Therefore, the piezo is an “active rod” which generates mechanical shocks when driven by electrical pulses.

The acceleration outputs follow a near linear performance curve allowing for easy output control and accelerations up to 18,000 G. Hpower shock system’s driving component is piezoelectric technology and therefore is rooted in precision and repeatability. This allows our shock generators to create identical shock impulses across any number of iterations.

Speed and power are a potent combination that is often hard to achieve simultaneously. In most cases, one needs to be sacrificed to achieve the other. To achieve both, traditional solutions need to combine different technologies, such as hydraulics and mechanical drives, which takes up space and comes at great expense. With our shaker series, we take our energy dense, high powered systems and compact them further into stiff, superbly dynamic systems. Hpower shakers deliver speeds up to 100kHz, while maintaining force capabilities up to 10kN, all under 100mm in length. These systems all preloaded and encased to allow for top performance in highly dynamic running conditions. These systems are often used in for applications such as HALT (Highly Accelerated Lifecyle Testing) for small electronic components such as MEMS, and other forms of materials testing.

Comparison electromagnetic shaker vs piezo-shaker

Piezo-shakers and conventional electromagnetic shakers have very different characteristics in terms of vibration amplitudes, achievable forces and size.

The structure of an electrodynamic shaker bears some resemblance to a common loudspeaker, but is more robust. At the heart of the shaker is a coil of wire, suspended in a fixed ra-dial magnetic field. When a current is passed through this coil, an axial force is produced in proportion to the current and is transmitted to a table structure to which the test article maybe affixed. Power analysis discloses the electrodynamic shaker to be a thermodynamically inefficient machine. As machine payload is increased, efficiency decreases, while line power factor improves.

Whereas electrodynamic shakers produce large strokes at comparatively low forces, piezo-shakers perform small strokes (up to a few 100 microns) and high forces (blocking forces up to some 10kN), as well as high stiffnesses (up to several 1000 N/m). Compared to their size, piezo shakers have a much higher stiffness and force potential at shorter travels than electromagnetic shakers.

Although some electromagnetic shakers can provide significantly higher forces up to the three-digit kN range, such systems quickly reach the size of a small car. Piezoelectric shakers can provide high blocking forces even at the smallest installation sizes. This means that even large masses up to 200kg can be moved by comparatively small shaker systems.

Electrodynamic shakers are more suitable for low frequencies due to their operating principle and structure, whereas piezo shakers can generate extremely high frequencies (in individual cases up to 100kHz) at small strokes. Although some electromagnetic shakers can generate frequencies in the double-digit kHz range, the usable forces at such frequencies is extraordinarily low.
